Chess puzzle rush

Solve as many chess puzzles as you can in 3 or 5 minutes, or with no clock at all in survival. They start easy and get harder as you go, and three wrong moves end the run.

Start a puzzle rush

How puzzle rush works

The first puzzle is waiting on the board, and the clock starts with your first move. Each puzzle opens with your opponent's move: find the winning reply and play the line out. Solve it and the next one comes up at once. One wrong move ends that puzzle as a strike, and the third strike ends the run, however much time is left.

The puzzles are taken from real games. The first is rated about 400 and each one after it is 50 points harder, solved or not, up to about 3000. The early puzzles go quickly, and every one you solve scores a point.

3 min

3:00

The default run: as many puzzles as you can solve in three minutes.

5 min

5:00

Two minutes more, to climb further up the ladder.

Survival

No clock

Take as long as you need over each puzzle. Only the third strike ends the run, and the result shows how long it took.

After the run

When the run ends, or you press Stop, every puzzle in it is listed with its rating and the time you took. Click one to try it again. This time a wrong move is taken back so you can keep looking, and the run's score doesn't change. Press Analyze to open the puzzle on the analysis board with the engine running and see what you missed. Play again puts a new first puzzle on the board.

To come back to a puzzle later, click its tile during the run to mark it for review, and it keeps a flag in the results. If the clock runs out or you press Stop partway through a puzzle, that puzzle is in the results too, but it doesn't count as a strike.

Beat your own best

The panel shows your best score in each mode. Best runs lists your five highest, for today, this week or all time, with your latest run highlighted, and Recent runs lists your last five. As a guest, your runs are kept in this browser. Sign up or log in and the runs you play from then on are saved to your account, so you can see them on any device.

More puzzles

For puzzles without a clock, the puzzle trainer has an endless supply of rated puzzles at your level, and the daily chess puzzles give you an easy, a medium and a hard one every day. To learn the patterns that come up again and again, see the chess tactics guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is puzzle rush free?

Yes. Every mode is free, and you can play as many runs as you like without an account. Sign up or log in only if you want your runs saved to your account.

Does puzzle rush change my puzzle rating?

No. Puzzle rush is unrated, so your puzzle rating stays the same however a run goes.

When does the clock start?

With your first move. The first puzzle is ready on the board when the page opens, and you can study it for as long as you like before you play. Survival has no clock at all.

How hard do the puzzles get?

The first puzzle is rated about 400, and each one after it is 50 points harder, whether you solved the last one or not. By the 21st puzzle they are around 1400, and from the 53rd they stay at about 3000.

What happens when I play a wrong move?

That puzzle ends and counts as a strike, and the next one comes up straight away. Three strikes end the run in every mode. Once the run is over, you can try any of its puzzles again.

Is there a puzzle rush leaderboard?

There's no leaderboard of other players, so you compete against yourself. Best runs lists your five highest scores in each mode, for today, this week or all time, and Recent runs lists your last five.
