Solve today's puzzle

Three puzzles a day

A new set comes out at midnight UTC, the same puzzles for everyone, wherever they are. Each one is chosen from the best-liked puzzles taken from real games. None is ever repeated, and none has just a single move to find.

Easy

1300–1500

For newer players, or a quick warm-up before the other two.

Medium

1700–1900

A step up for club players: the winning idea takes more finding.

Hard

2150–2300

For strong players: longer lines and first moves that are easy to miss.

The figures are puzzle ratings, on the same scale as the puzzle trainer.

Streaks and the calendar

Each difficulty keeps its own streak: play its puzzle every day to build it. Missed a day? Yesterday's puzzle still counts today, so play it before midnight UTC and the streak carries on.

The calendar shows every past day at each difficulty, and how your first attempt went. As a guest, your streaks are kept in this browser. Sign up or log in and they are saved to your account, including the days you played before, so they follow you to any device.

Want more than three a day?

The puzzle trainer has an endless supply of rated puzzles at your level, with 31 themes for practicing one tactic at a time. To learn the patterns behind them, see the chess tactics guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is the daily chess puzzle free?

Yes. All three daily puzzles are free, with no account needed. Sign up only if you want your streaks saved to your account.

When does the chess puzzle of the day change?

At midnight UTC, for everyone at once. Once you have solved a puzzle, the panel counts down to the next one.

How hard are the daily puzzles?

Easy puzzles are rated 1300 to 1500, medium ones 1700 to 1900 and hard ones 2150 to 2300. Pick the level that suits you, or try all three.

Does the daily puzzle change my puzzle rating?

No. Daily puzzles never change your puzzle rating. What they build is your streak.

What happens if I miss a day?

Yesterday's puzzle still counts toward your streak today, so you can catch up. Miss two days in a row and that difficulty's streak starts again.

Can I play old daily puzzles?

Yes. Every past daily puzzle is in the calendar, for each difficulty. You can play any of them at any time, though only today's and yesterday's count toward your streak.
