King's Gambit
The romantic opening. White offers a pawn on move two to tear open the f-file and race for the black king.
Italian Game
The classical way to open a chess game: develop, aim at f7, castle. The best first opening for most players.
Scotch Game
White opens the center on move three instead of maneuvering. Clear, active positions with less theory than the Ruy Lopez.
The idea of 2.Nc3
The knight on c3 supports e4 and d5, and keeps the f-pawn free. White can follow with f4 for a King's Gambit with the knight already developed, with Bc4 for an Italian-style attack, or with g3 and Bg2 for a quiet positional game.
The main lines
- 2...Nf6 3.f4 (Vienna Gambit). The critical answer is 3...d5, striking in the center: 4.fxe5 Nxe4 leads to sharp, well-known positions.
- 2...Nc6 3.f4. Black can take with ...exf4 and meet d4 with ...Qh4+, or play the safer ...Bc5.
- 3.Bc4 Nxe4 4.Qh5 (Frankenstein-Dracula). One of the wildest lines in chess: Black sacrifices the exchange for a dangerous attack.
How Black meets it
The most reliable answer is to fight for the center at once: against 2.Nc3, 2...Nf6 with ...d5 on the next move takes the sting out of f4. Black should avoid passive setups that let White play f4 and fxe5 for free.
Against 3.Bc4, the safe 3...Nc6 or 3...Bc5 avoids the Frankenstein-Dracula complications if you do not want them.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Vienna Game good for beginners?
Yes. It teaches central control and attacking with f4, and the main lines are less theoretical than the Ruy Lopez or the Open Sicilian.
What is the Vienna Gambit?
It is the Vienna with an early f4, offering the f-pawn like a King's Gambit but with the knight already on c3, which makes the gambit safer for White.
How should Black play against the Vienna?
Answer 2.Nc3 with 2...Nf6, and meet 3.f4 with 3...d5. Striking in the center is the best way to neutralize White's attacking plans.
