The classical way to open a chess game: develop, aim at f7, castle. The best first opening for most players.
Scotch Game
White opens the center on move three instead of maneuvering. Clear, active positions with less theory than the Ruy Lopez.
Fried Liver Attack
A knight sacrifice on f7 that drags the black king into the middle of the board. The most famous trap in the Italian Game.
Why it works
After 4.Nxc6 dxc6 Black is a pawn down but has open lines for both bishops and the queen. Every natural white move has a trap behind it: 5.e5 Ne4 6.d3 Bc5! threatens ...Bxf2+ and ...Qh4, and 6...Bc5 7.dxe4 Bxf2+ 8.Ke2 Bg4+ wins the queen. 5.d3 Bc5 6.Be2 h5 aims ...Ng4 at f2.
It became famous through online play, where opponents meet it for the first time with seconds on the clock.
Is it sound?
No. With careful play White keeps an extra pawn and a sound position. The Stafford is a practical weapon: it scores well in fast games and badly against prepared opponents.
How to beat it as White
- 5.d3 Bc5 6.Be2 and then Nc3, Be3 and O-O, carefully. Do not play h3 automatically: it can give Black a hook for ...h5 and ...Ng4.
- Watch f2. Most of the traps involve ...Bc5, ...Ng4 or ...Qh4 against f2. Cover it before going for anything else.
- Avoid 5.e5 unless you know the lines: it is playable, but it walks straight into the best-known traps.
- 4.Nf3 is a simple way to decline the trade, returning to a normal Petrov a pawn up.
If you are Black and want a sound version of the same fight, the regular Petrov (3...d6) is one of the most solid defenses to 1.e4.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Stafford Gambit good?
It is objectively bad but practically dangerous. It is a good blitz weapon and a poor choice for serious games against prepared opponents.
What is the best way to play against the Stafford Gambit?
Take on c6 and play 5.d3, then Be2, Nc3, Be3 and castle, always checking f2 before each move. Keep the extra pawn and avoid tactics until your king is safe.
Who made the Stafford Gambit popular?
It goes back to the nineteenth century, but online streamers brought it back in the 2020s, which is why it is common in fast online games.
