Zwischenzug in chess
The expected recapture can wait. Insert a check or a bigger threat first, and the whole exchange changes value.
A zwischenzug - German for "in-between move", also called an intermezzo - is a move played instead of an expected recapture or reply, creating a threat that must be answered first.
Why it works
Exchanges create a rhythm: you take, I take back. A zwischenzug breaks the rhythm. Because your in-between move carries a bigger threat - a check, an attack on the queen, a mate threat - the opponent has to deal with it, and only then do you make the recapture you were "supposed" to make.
The result is a free tempo, and often a free piece. The same capture that looked like an even trade becomes a winning one, purely because of the order.
The most common blunder in club chess is recapturing automatically. Before you take back, ask once: is there a check, a capture or a threat that is even bigger?
How to spot one
- Look at the position after the opponent's capture but before your recapture. What is suddenly loose or exposed on their side?
- Scan checks first. A check is the strongest zwischenzug because it cannot be ignored.
- Watch for the enemy queen or king appearing on a line your pieces already control.
- In calculation, whenever a line ends in "and then I take back", test one alternative first.
Zwischenzug in defence
It works both ways. When you are the one about to lose material, an in-between check or counter-threat often saves the position - your opponent must answer it, and the tactic they were counting on no longer works a move later.
