Mate in 2 in chess
Force mate in two moves. The best pure calculation training there is, because the answer is always provable.
A mate in 2 puzzle asks for a first move after which every legal reply by the defender allows checkmate on the following move.
A method that works
Do not start by looking for checks. Start with the king:
- Count the king's escape squares. If the king has three flight squares, no mate in two exists until they are taken away - so your first move probably takes them away rather than giving check.
- Find the mating square. Where would the final blow land? Which of your pieces can reach it, and what is stopping it?
- Look for the quiet move. The hardest mate-in-two solutions are not checks at all - they are moves that put the defender in zugzwang or cover every escape at once.
- Check every defensive reply. A mate in two must work against all legal answers, not just the natural one. This is where most failed attempts break.
If the puzzle resists, ask what the defender's only useful piece is doing - a deflection or a sacrifice that removes it is the most common first move in a hard mate-in-two.
Patterns that repeat
- Back rank mate after a deflection sacrifice.
- Queen sacrifice to drag the king onto a mating square (a decoy).
- Double check forcing the king onto the only square your knight covers.
- Smothered mate with a knight when the king is boxed in by its own pieces.
- Two-piece mating nets: queen and knight, or rook and bishop, covering the whole escape zone.
Why they are worth doing every day
Mate-in-two puzzles train the two things that decide club games: seeing all forcing moves, and checking the opponent's replies before committing. Both are habits, and habits form with repetition rather than with study.
